Following and awaiting results
Nobody assigns your Updates lane to you. You fill it yourself, through choices you make elsewhere in the app about what you want to keep an eye on. These controls live on the resource itself (a card, a card run, a conversation), not inside Inbox.
How does Follow work?
A Follow button (shown as Following once active) appears on cards, card runs, and conversations. Turning it on subscribes you to that item's important milestones. Future milestones on it show up as Updates items, with "You follow this card / run / conversation" as the reason given in the item's detail pane. Turning it off (Stop following) ends the subscription; you will not be notified of anything on it after that.
Following is explicitly not the same as being assigned or being responsible. It is stated directly in the control's tooltip ("Following does not assign the card to you"). It has no effect on Project Actions or on who can claim anything.
Await result
On a unit of running work (a work lifecycle, such as a card run), a "Notify me when this work finishes" control does something narrower and one-shot: it does not follow every milestone, it just asks for a single Updates item once that work completes, fails, or is cancelled. Once active it reads "Waiting for result"; toggling it off cancels the wait.
Reading the reason back in Inbox
Whichever of these choices produced an item, the detail pane's "Why this is in your Inbox" section names it in plain language. See Personal inbox for the exact wording for each reason (assigned, mentioned, escalated to you, awaited result, or one of the three following variants).
